Pasabag – Monks Valley

blog

Pasha Bag Valley, also known as Monks Valley, is a unique natural wonder located in the heart of Cappadocia. The valley is famous for its distinctive fairy chimneys, tall cone-shaped rock formations that were formed by volcanic eruptions millions of years ago. The name “Monks Valley” comes from the fact that Christian monks once lived in the caves and carved out churches and monasteries in the fairy chimneys.

According to local legend, the fairy chimneys were formed when a group of fairies came to the valley and danced all night, leaving their pointed hats behind as they disappeared into the morning light. While the real story is less magical, it is still fascinating to learn about the geological forces that created these remarkable formations.

To reach Pasha Bag Valley, visitors can either take a guided tour or rent a car and drive themselves. The valley is located about 10 minutes from the town of Goreme and is easily accessible via a paved road. Once there, visitors can explore the valley on foot, hiking through the winding paths and admiring the surreal landscape. Some of the most famous fairy chimneys in the valley include the “Mushroom,” the “Camel,” and the “Pasha Bag.”

In addition to its natural beauty, Pasha Bag Valley is also home to a number of historic churches and monasteries. The most famous of these is the Church of St. Simeon, which is built into a large fairy chimney and features a beautiful fresco of the saint. Other notable sights in the valley include the Chapel of St. Nicholas, the Chapel of St. Onuphrius, and the Monastery of St. Chariton.

Overall, Pasha Bag Valley is a must-see destination for anyone visiting Cappadocia. Its unique geological formations and rich history make it a fascinating and unforgettable experience.

To reach Pasha Bag Valley, you can take a taxi, drive your own car or take a local bus from Goreme or Urgup. The valley is located about 5 kilometers from Goreme and 7 kilometers from Urgup. If you’re taking a local bus, you can get off at the entrance of the valley and walk to the trailhead. It’s also possible to hike to Pasha Bag Valley from Goreme or Urgup, but it’s a long and challenging hike, so it’s recommended to go with a guide.
